WHERE TO BEGIN?
After I've had the lightning strike of an idea (which could be anything from an invented character to an object via a historical event), I grab my felt tip pens and paper and start drawing. Some guitars appear on the page very quickly, as if by magic, while others are hard work and involve lots of mental heavy lifting. Don't worry, the stress is all mine - you just enjoy the finished thing.
Once I'm happy with the drawings, it's off to the workshop to play Dr Frankenstein and begin pulling parts together.
THE MAKING OF SAWDUST
My guitar bodies are custom made for me here in the UK. They are always light, one or two premium pieces of wood and bare naked so I can modify them anyway I want; add binding, spray nitro, apply custom made decals and brass work, whatever it takes to get the unique Joe Doe Guitar story told.
The necks I use are manufactured by either Warmoth or Allparts. Like the bodies, they arrive raw so I can re-shape them a little, roll the edges, finish them in glorious nitro then do the whole Joe Doe abuse thing to them.
When it comes to the shiny metal bits and accessories I always use the best - Gotoh or Kluson tuners, Wilkinson vibratos, bone nuts, CTS pots, Oak switches, Switchcraft sockets and the finest pickups available - Fender, Dimarzio, Lace Sensor, Bareknuckle. Part of what I do is try lots of different pickups in a guitar body till I find the best marriage of the two. It takes a good while and can be very tedious, but if that's what it takes to make each guitar sing loud and clear then I'll do it.
MY LAWYER WANTS TO SEE THE WARRANTY.
Full disclosure is what I'm all about. The warranty lasts for two years if something goes wrong which seems pretty standard fare. Here’s a link for you or your lawyer to have counsel over. Just so you know, each Joe Doe Guitar comes with a high quality case - either tweed of black vinyl, whatever suits the guitar. And if I might add, I am fiercely proud of the work I do, so if a problem develops I’ll be mortified and want to put it right immediately.
I'VE HAD A LIGHT BULB MOMENT! CAN YOU MAKE THIS?
Commissions are possible, but they must fall under the Joe Doe mantra of a guitar with a unique story... Which means if you want a mint ’62 strat in candy apple red, I’m the wrong guy. But if you want a candy apple red ’62 strat that was all good until it fell into the hands of a teenager under the influence of Eruption and they decided to customise the hell out of it, then you’re talking Joe Doe’s language. Hey, that's not a bad build idea....
(YIKES! COMMISSIONS ARE CLOSED TILL SUMMER 2019!)
WILL YOU EVER MAKE THE SAME GUITAR AGAIN?
Nope. No way. Each Joe Doe guitar is an original, unique, one off instrument, never to be rebooted like a stale Hollywood franchise. Spiderman number what now? Once my guitars are gone, they're gone. Believe me when I say I tear up when each one leaves but hey, that's raising guitars for you.
DO YOU SHIP INTERNATIONALLY?
I do, so contact me for a quote. I use either DHL or UPS, both of which have proven reliable in the past. Delivery via private jet is an option at your expense, and drone delivery will be available in the near future. Watch the skies for that.
I'VE RUN OUT OF QUESTIONS!
Good, because I've run out of answers.
